1. Base Fabric (Substrate): The "Skeleton" of the Wipe
The base fabric is the "skeleton" of the wipe and comes into direct contact with the baby's skin. Currently, high-quality baby wipes on the market mainly use the following materials:
Cotton
Characteristics:This is recognized as the top-tier material. Cotton is naturally soft, skin-friendly, breathable, and highly unlikely to cause allergies.
Advantages:Extremely soft, most friendly for newborns and babies with sensitive skin. Usually biodegradable and more eco-friendly.
Disadvantages:Highest cost, making the wipes more expensive; poor dispersibility (should not be flushed down the toilet).
Plant-based Fibers (e.g., Lyocell)
Characteristics:Sourced from natural wood (like eucalyptus), produced through an eco-friendly process, belonging to regenerated cellulose fiber.
Advantages:Silky smooth texture, very soft, highly absorbent, strong and not easily torn. The production process is environmentally friendly, and it's biodegradable.
Disadvantages:Higher cost than standard nonwoven fabric.
This is currently the preferred material for many high-end non-cotton baby wipes, offering excellent overall performance.
Spunlace Nonwoven
Characteristics:This is the most common and mainstream material for baby wipes, typically a blend of polyester (polyester fiber) and viscose (rayon).
Advantages:Good balance of softness, thickness, strength, and absorbency. Cost-effective.
Note:The polyester component is a synthetic fiber. High-quality spunlace can be very soft, but lower-end products might be thinner, prone to pilling, or rough. Most are not flushable.
Substrate Comparison Summary:
Ultimate Softness & Safety Choice:Cotton (disregarding cost and flushability).
High-End Comprehensive Choice:Plant-based fibers (e.g., Lyocell), offering a great balance of softness, strength, and eco-friendliness.
Mainstream Cost-Effective Choice:High-quality Spunlace Nonwoven. Choosing well-known brands usually ensures better texture.
2. Liquid Ingredients: Purity and Gentleness are Core
The liquid ingredients are the "soul" of the wipe, determining its gentleness and potential for irritation. The best choice is very simple:
Core Ingredient: Purified Water
Water that has been deeply purified by technologies like RO reverse osmosis, EDI, etc., to remove impurities, microorganisms, and ions.
This is the safest, least likely to cause irritation base. Many brands are named something like "xx% Purified Water Wipes".
3. Bonus: Natural Soothing and Moisturizing Ingredients
On the basis of purified water, adding some beneficial ingredients can enhance the experience, for example:
Chamomile Extract:Soothes and calms the skin.
Vitamin E (Tocopheryl Acetate):Moisturizes and acts as an antioxidant.
Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Extract:Moisturizes and conditions.
Note:These ingredients should be added in small quantities and be naturally sourced.
4. Ingredients to Avoid
Alcohol:Can cause skin dryness and irritation.
Fragrance/Parfum:A common allergen, can cause rashes.
Preservatives MIT/CMIT:Methylisothiazolinone (MIT) and Methylchloroisothiazolinone (CMIT) carry a higher risk of causing allergic reactions and are banned for use in leave-on cosmetics like wipes in the EU.
Fluorescent Brighteners:Unnecessary chemical additives.
Soap:Disrupts the skin's natural lipid barrier.
