According to AFP, the UK Department for Environment announced on November 18 that it will ban the sale and supply of wet wipes containing plastic. The government stated that such products not only cause environmental pollution but are also a major culprit behind sewer blockages. The new regulations, set to take effect in early 2027, will help keep rivers, lakes, and beaches cleaner while providing better protection for wildlife. Research by UK water industry bodies found that 94% of sewer blockages are caused by wet wipes, costing water companies approximately £200 million (around S$342 million) annually in maintenance fees.
